B: ‘Gifted’ & ‘Talented’

What is meant by the terms ‘Gifted’ and ‘Talented’?

  • Gifted and talented in PE is “the process of identifying, selecting, providing for and supporting the most able pupils” (Youth Sport Trust, 2010a).
  • The Youth Sport Trust (2010c) assert that “pupils are recognised as talented when they demonstrate high-level ability within the range of PE contexts or have the potential to do so”.
  • Northern Ireland Curriculum  (2006) has advocated that there should be a distinction between ‘talent’ and ‘giftedness’. He refers to talented students as those who display exceptional ability in areas which they have been taught, and gifted students as those who display exceptional abilities in areas which they have received no direct learning.
  • Pupils are usually selected as gifted and/or talented if they excel in one or more of the five multi-abilities (Youth Sport Trust, 2010c).
